cbs news' jericka duncan has more on this terrifying ordeal. reporter: police say 20- year-old richard shoop walked into the garden state plaza mall in paramus, new jersey, and opened fire. >> out of nowhere the guy walked right past the front door and like shooting shots in the air. he paused for a second and looked inside the store. i just froze. >> reporter: police quickly responded and s.w.a.t. team members stormed the facility. >> the shooter for whatever reason instead of staying and firing, fled deeper into the mall. >> reporter: officials locked the mall down and began april search for the suspect and anyone who may be hiding for safety. >> we go store by store room by room and that takes quite a while on 2.2 million square feet. >> reporter: authorities escorted individuals out of the store one by one as they cleared each room. >> it's okay to go. >> reporter: the cell phone video shows what it was like for the people coming out. >> let me tell you, it is the

scariest thing when you see the s.w.a.t. team coming waiting at the door for you to come out. >> reporter: shortly around 3 a.m. police found shoop dead. >> one of the s.w.a.t. teams here as we progressed through the night was able to locate the victim in the back room with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> reporter: authorities say appears shoop was on a suicide mission and didn't want to hurt anyone else, jericka duncan, cbs news, paramus, new jersey. >> that mall in paramus is one of the largest in the greater new york city area. the two tsa officers wounded in the los angeles airport shootings are now out of the hospital. one of them tony grigsby, spoke to reporters yesterday. he says he was trying to help an elderly man get to safety when the gunshot him twice in the foot. he was friends with gerardo hernandez, the tsa officer who was killed. >> only now it has hit me that i would never see him again. >> the third wounded person' passenger needs more surgery

and physical therapy but is in good condition. the fbi revisited paul ciancia's apartment yesterday. they left with one of his roommates, who drove him to the airport. investigators say there's no indication the roommate knew of ciancia's plans. 4:33. the parents of a teenager fatally shot by a sonoma county sheriff's deputy are taking legal action now. the family of andy lopez filed a federal lawsuit yesterday against the county and deputy erick gelhaus. the suit says the shooting was reckless and a violation of civil rights. the deputy opened fire after andy lopez refused orders to drop a fake weapon. >> we are going to prove through our investigation and our lawsuit that the shooting of andy lopez is absolutely and unequivocally unjustified. >> we want justice and then also we want an honest

investigation. >> gelhaus' attorney has said his client thought his life was in danger at the time. an attorney for the sonoma county says the lawsuit is premature and, quote, has the potential of interfering with the conduct of the full criminal investigation. a frantic phone call is the last anyone heard from a tourist in san francisco. kpix 5's christin ayers reports the man's family has come from brazil to find him. >> i'm in trouble. there are some people following me and i need help. call the police. call a taxi. send someone to find me. reporter: they are the last words on a haze heard from her brother paulo netto over the phone before he mystery us willly dips appeared one week ago. >> been to hospitals. been to shelters. >> reporter: but still no sign of paulo an art student studying in los angeles. he came to san francisco october 25th to look into studying at academy of art university. he was only supposed to stay

there. the env a tugboat known as captain al is out of the oakland estuary more than 15 years after it was sunk there. the environmental protection agency said the 105-foot-long boat was a hazard to recreational sailors and released chemicals into the environment. captain al was raised as part of a two-month effort to clear debris from the estuary. ohio kidnapping survivor michelle knight has told her harrowing story to talk show host dr. phil. knight was one of three women held captive for more than a decade by ariel castro who killed himself in prison in september. >> so he gets you in this room.
